Ode to a Naked Beauty

Within the past year that I have been drawing it dawned on me that I have only drawn naked men..

in Greece..

Greek men for that matter and never any women.

And although I would rarely complain about naked greek men,

I find it absurd because womens bodies are so beautiful

and the lines so different that I had to…

I just had to.

And what better way to complement a naked woman than with some Pablo Neruda poetry?

Ode to a Naked Beauty

With chaste heart, and pure
eyes
I celebrate you, my beauty,
restraining my blood
so that the line
surges and follows
your contour,
and you bed yourself in my verse,
as in woodland, or wave-spume:
earth’s perfume,
sea’s music.

Nakedly beautiful,
whether it is your feet, arching
at a primal touch
of sound or breeze,
or your ears,
tiny spiral shells
from the splendour of America’s oceans.
Your breasts also,
of equal fullness, overflowing
with the living light
and, yes,
winged
your eyelids of silken corn
that disclose
or enclose
the deep twin landscapes of your eyes.

The line of your back
separating you
falls away into paler regions
then surges
to the smooth hemispheres
of an apple,
and goes splitting
your loveliness
into two pillars
of burnt gold, pure alabaster,
to be lost in the twin clusters of your feet,
from which, once more, lifts and takes fire
the double tree of your symmetry:
flower of fire, open circle of candles,
swollen fruit raised
over the meeting of earth and ocean.

Your body – from what substances
agate, quartz, ears of wheat,
did it flow, was it gathered,
rising like bread
in the warmth,
and signalling hills
silvered,
valleys of a single petal, sweetnesses
of velvet depth,
until the pure, fine, form of woman
thickened
and rested there?

It is not so much light that falls
over the world
extended by your body
its suffocating snow,
as brightness, pouring itself out of you,
as if you were
burning inside.

Under your skin the moon is alive.

    Those are great sketches.

I was a graphic designer for eight years in my native Canada and I always found the female form easier and more enjoyable to draw than the male figure when I was studying life drawing in art school, or any other time I took the notion to draw the human form.

    Keep up the sketching. 🙂

It’s true! Too many harsh lines for men.. I’m glad you like them, I will take your advice :)!

Absolutely the reason I found the female form more enjoyable to draw.

Nice flowing curves, many more reference points….. clearly when the human body came to be, more art went into the female form.

  3. I loved everything about this. Everything. I also sketch naked woman…..a secret pastime maybe 🙂

It’s so exciting, isn’t it?! I think it should not be so secret, start again… with naked women, you can never do the same sketch twice. Thank you for reading!!

  4. My father was friends with Neruda and they published some poetry together (Neruda did the poetry, my father the translation). This has reminded me I really need to read more of the great man’s work. Love the drawing as well.

WHAT. That is the most amazing thing I’ve ever heard. Seriously!? I’m in awe. How incredible for your dad. Neruda is a genius.

      1. Oh yes seriously. This was my father. A very interesting man and great character.

a great, tender orb of delight

    skin, freely.

Ah, Neruda! So much passion. Words thick and sweet like honey sliding through pale down over soft curves and swells.
